Simona Halep was in inspired form at the WTA Birmingham Classic, but the Romanian second seed could face some resistance from Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia in Sunday’s semi-final.

Playing in her first grass-court event since winning Wimbledon in 2019, Halep won all three of her matches in the Midlands in straight sets, facing promising Briton Katie Boulter last time out.

But it’s fair to say the 30-year-old is still not at her best, having missed the grass-court season last year through injury, and Haddad Maia is worth a bet with a 3-start. .5 games on handicap.

Haddad Maia is rising rapidly through the WTA ranks this year and has just won the singles and doubles titles at the Nottingham Open, putting her in good stead for Wimbledon.

She knocked out third seed Camila Giorgi in the last round and can be competitive.

The other Birmingham Classic semi-final will pit eighth seed Shuai Zhang against sixth seed Sorana Cirstea and bettors should expect a close match.

Zhang was Haddad Maia’s winning partner in the doubles at Nottingham and is in good spirits at the moment, having comfortably seen a strong Dayana Yastremska in the quarter-finals.

As for Cirstea, she fought bravely to come back from a set to dispatch Donna Vekic in her last game and backing her match with Zhang to submit over 21.5 games could be the way forward.

Two of Cirstea’s three matches have exceeded that total in Birmingham, while all of Zhang’s encounters at that event have also exceeded that line.
