Match preview

Losses in their opening matches left Welsh Fire and Oval Invincibles on the back foot in The Hundred’s second season, so the two will be eager to secure a win in the second claim at Sophia Gardens on Sunday.

The decision of star man and captain Jonny Bairstow to step down on the eve of the tournament was bound to affect the Fire, who were firmly put in their place by champions Southern Brave on Wednesday night.

Former England international Ben Duckett stepped in in Bairstow’s absence, contributing 40 of the Fire’s 107-7 tally, although that was never going to prove enough runs against a skilful Brave side who wandered to victory with 33 balls to spare.

The Invincibles came a long way to victory in their opener, dropping just three points to rivals London Spirit in a high-scoring contest at The Oval.

The continued struggles of England white-ball fly-half Jason Roy will be a concern, but the Invincibles’ striking depth came to the fore on Thursday, albeit in defeat, as numbers five-nine contributed 146 of their 168 points.

That unity could be further cemented on Sunday by the inclusion of South African international Rilee Rossouw, who looks an attractive bet to be named Match Hero on his early return to Sophia Gardens.

The 32-year-old netted 623 points for Somerset in this year’s T20 Blast and hit 96 for South Africa in their recent T20 win over England in Cardiff last week alone.
