Match preview
New Warrington Wolves manager Daryl Powell made a winning start to the 2022 Betfred Super League season at his former club Leeds Rhinos on Saturday and Powell reunites with another of his former employers, Castleford, in the second round.
Powell transformed the Tigers from runners-to-trophy contenders during an eight-season stint at The Jungle before opting to leave West Yorkshire for Warrington in the off-season.
Cas made the 2017 Super League Grand Final and 2014 Challenge Cup Final under Powell and both will be on his radar in his first season at Halliwell Jones.
The Wire, perennial Super League bridesmaids, left it late to beat Leeds, who, despite being down to 12 men in the 16th minute, ruled much of the game, and Powell will know that his new team will have to improve if they want to break their duck title in 2022.
However, two points are all that matters in the first round and that’s two more than Castleford managed as they were beaten 26-16 by Salford in Lee Radford’s first game as Tigers head coach.
The last eight league and cup clashes between the pair have been shared at four wins each and a ten-point handicap could be a little stiff on Thursday night.
The last three meetings have ended in victories of 16 points for Warrington, 15 for Cas and 24 for Wolves, but the previous five games have all been settled by less than ten points and there is enough firepower and creativity in the ranks of Castleford for them. keeping pace with Warrington.
