Preview of Thursday’s bets

Two-time world champion Rohan Dennis and 2018 Tour de France winner Geraint Thomas are the two big names set to take all the hits in the men’s time trial at the Commonwealth Games on Thursday.

Dennis, a four-time Australian TT champion to go along with his pair of world triumphs, won bronze at the Olympics last year and that field is inevitably much weaker.

Thomas, miles behind Dennis in Tokyo last summer, is back to his best after a fine Tour where he made the podium and finished fourth in Stage 20, a 40km time trial . Today’s time trial is comparable to 37 km.

Both of these names should be on the podium, but that means there’s another spot for anyone in the mood for a two-way punt with New Zealand’s Aaron Gate caught to deliver at 33-1 .

Gate won the 2021 New Zealand national time trial and is clearly in the shape of his life having already won three gold medals at the Lee Valley VeloPark last week.

The Australians are looking for a double against the clock with two-time defending Australian national champion Grace Brown 2-9 to lead them home in the women’s race.

After the cricket fight at Edgbaston there is the first really big showdown as Group B top two England and New Zealand meet for the right to avoid play against Australia in the semis -final. England are 4-9 to get the job done.
