Team news

Goalkeeper Alex McCarthy has been sent off, so Fraser Forster is expected to keep his spot. Jack Stephens, Nathan Tella and Lyanco all returned positive Covid tests ahead of Sunday’s victory over West Ham.

Cristian Romero and Ryan Sessegnon are set to miss again while Giovani Lo Celso is uncertain.

Match preview

Antonio Conte wasted no time in raising morale at Tottenham and the impressive Italian can stretch his Premier League unbeaten run in Spurs’ hotseat to seven with a win at Southampton.

A 3-0 bashing by Crystal Palace on Boxing Day put Tottenham just six points behind fourth-placed Arsenal with three games in hand and in the meantime helped stop a cycle of negativity.

Spurs are certainly more organized with Conte at the helm than they were under his predecessors Jose Mourinho and Nuno Espirito Santo and their return to form should give them full confidence on their trip to St Mary’s.

Tottenham have collected 13 points in their last five league games and while each of those games has been in north London, there is no obvious reason to think they are going to start faltering now just because ‘they go on the road.

Spurs’ only away game under Conte came just five days after his arrival – a goalless draw against Everton at Goodison Park, where chances for both teams were scarce.

Since then, however, Tottenham have registered an expected goal count of at least 2.0 in their next five starts.

Londoners have only scored nine goals in Nuno’s ten appearances, but that goal tally rose to 12 of six under Conte, who already excels in raising the level of key personnel.

South Korean star Heung-Min Son has scored in each of Tottenham’s last four league games and once again terrorizes defenses, while talisman Harry Kane is also back among the goals and opened the scoring in consecutive meetings.

Their two main scoring threats are in form and shooting as Luca Moura provided a man of the match display against Palace so Southampton should fear the worst.

The Saints won a five-goal epic at West Ham on Boxing Day, but reportedly put in a lot more energy than Spurs in their easy victory over Palace ten-man, who failed to score an effort on goal .

Not only do Tottenham look more dangerous in the advanced areas, but there is greater form and identity in their game, which has allowed them to concede just two of Conte’s six league appearances.

While Spurs keep their opponents at bay, the same can’t be said for Southampton, who have lost 16 goals in their last seven top matches.

Only title rivals Manchester City and Liverpool have won more points than Tottenham since Conte’s appointment and their purple patch is expected to continue on the south coast.

Key statistic

Tottenham have won each of the last three meetings with Southampton.
