Leipzig can enjoy more comfort at home

German football returns after its winter break to form the centerpiece of an intriguing day of football across the continent.

RB Leipzig struggled in the first half of the season after being robbed for their best defender, midfielder and manager this summer by Bayern Munich.

Jesse Marsch paid the price for his team’s poor form early in the season and was replaced by another young manager off the production line in the form of Domenico Tedesco.

The 36-year-old took four points in his first three games before the lull of the season and will have enjoyed the time to work with his new team.

Leipzig’s first return leg sees them welcome poor travelers Mainz, who despite their mid-table position have only taken six out of 24 possible points on the road this season.

The Red Bull Arena has provided a bit of home comfort for Lepizig, who has won six of his nine home league games, and they are set to start the new year with another.

Bellingham could be the key to BVB

In the late kick-off in Germany, Frankfurt will face second-placed Dortmund and goals are expected to be in sight. There have been 38 goals in Dortmund’s last 11 league games and they will look to bounce back from a disappointing 3-2 loss to Hertha in the last game before the break.

Marco Rose’s side have struggled on the road this season, with four of their five losses facing the Yellow Wall. They will have to rectify that if they are to carve out a place for themselves in Bayern’s lead, which was nine points before the break of the season.

Jude Bellingham returns from suspension for BVB and looks too expensive to score a goal. The young Englishman has already scored three goals this season and ranks third for the number of shots taken for this Dortmund side, behind Erling Haaland and Marco Reus.

Dortmund need a win and in what will likely be another high-scoring affair, Bellingham could be on the scoresheet.

Stubborn Granada could frustrate Barca

Barcelona were terrified of third tier Linares during the midweek Copa Del Rey and certainly haven’t allayed fears that there are still serious problems at the club.

Despite the signature signing of Ferran Torres and Dani Alves, they are still a side struggling to live up to the standards of yesteryear, even with former midfielder maestro Xavi back at the helm.

The Catalans face tough fighters Granada, who haven’t tasted defeat in their last seven league games, including a 2-1 win over Atletico just before Christmas.

Only Athletic Bilbao have recorded more draws than Granada’s eight and they could break another deadlock against a Barca side missing several key players.

Memphis Depay, Ansu Fati and Pedri are all skeptical about this contest and a serious Covid outbreak has just subsided at the club, so Granda is supposed to avoid defeat.
