The Rochdale Hornets advanced to the fourth round of the Challenge Cup on Saturday February 12 with a hard-fought 12-28 win over Lock Lane.

The Hornets will now host the Barrow Raiders in the Crown Oil Arena in the next round.

The Hornets started brilliantly in wet conditions and after sustained early pressure Ben Killan got the upper hand. It only took three minutes and he dragged several Lock Lane players with him as he crashed for the first down. Lewis Sheridan added the extras leaving the score 0-6.

After seven minutes, Rochdale had doubled their lead when Ryan Forshaw ran through the whitewash showing dazzling footwork as he opened up the defense on his return to the side. Sheridan had no problem adding the extra two. 0-12

The hosts reacted, however, and changed their momentum when a cross kick found their center Craig Duncan who was stopped after 14 minutes. Nathan Fozzard added the extras from outside. 6-12.

Confidence was high in front of the large home crowd and the sustained pressure from Lock Lane was fended off by the Hornets’ brilliant defence. Killan then escaped with the ball.

After 21 minutes, fantastic captain Sean Penkywicz slipped in from the dummy half with Sheridan continuing his perfection off the tee. 6-18

The first-half story continued as Lock Lane in the 28th minute drove their power play with Callum Butler over the top. Fozzard scored the goal leaving 12-18 at the break.

The tough wet conditions finally caught up to the sides as the second half was less fluid.

The Hornets stayed firm in defense and Sheridan added two more points showing effective game management in the 58th minute. 12-20.

Ben Mawson then saw a red card for Lock Lane as tempers boiled over to give Rochdale the men’s advantage.

The match then ended with three minutes left when Sheridan cleared after a solid transfer and provided a brilliant dummy to try. He added the extras as usual. 12-26.

The final act of the match was a Penkywicz penalty past the posts to seal the win. 12-28.

The win means the Hornets will be back in action in two weeks’ time in the next round at home to the Barrow Raiders.
