Littleborough rugby player Paige Travis has been named in the England women’s squad for Sunday’s test match against Wales at the Cross Keys RFC, Newport – the first of two consecutive weekends as the team is stepping up its preparations for the World Cup this fall.

Travis, 21, a former Hollingworth Academy student, joined St Helens last year and has scored 15 tries in 20 appearances over the two seasons. The back row had already been selected for the England squad in May 2020 and made his international debut in June 2021.

Travis previously represented Firwood Waterloo and Littleborough Ladies (rugby union).

Head coach Craig Richards said: “It’s great to be able to introduce so many talented new faces to the team ahead of this weekend’s trip to Wales.

“All the potential debutants impressed me at the start of the season and deserved the opportunity to show us what they can do on the international stage.

“There is now real competition for places in the team and players have to perform consistently to wear the England shirt.

“The upcoming mid-season internationals against Wales and France will allow us to see where we stand as a team and are essential in our continued preparations for the Rugby World Cup later this year.”

England Women won 60-0 against Wales in last year’s mid-season international match at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

Sunday’s game, which kicks off at 1pm on Sunday June 12, will be streamed live on The Sportsman and The Sportsman Rugby League on YouTube. The following weekend, England take on France at the Halliwell Jones Stadium in Warrington on Saturday June 18 – in a double-header that also includes the England men against the Combined Nations All Stars, with both matches live on Sky Sports.
