Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang trains far from rest of Arsenal squad

In light of Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta’s decision to take away the captain’s post from striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, former Gunners left-back Nigel Winterburn has asked if that’s the case. was the right decision and who might be the ideal candidates to make. on the armband in the Emirates.

“I’m not surprised Aubameyang was stripped of his captain’s post as it was clear from Mikel Arteta’s press conference before and after the Southampton game,” said the former full-back.

“He looked quite livid, he made the statement and didn’t really want to discuss it further.

“There has been talk of his late return after picking up his mother, but it has happened with him before.

“It seems to me that Arteta is pretty clear on the guidelines for the players and there is no excuse.

“There are limits that are acceptable and if you step out of them you put pressure on the manager to leave you out of the squad.

“And in Aubameyang’s case, this is the second or third time that this has happened, so because it happened again, I think he left Arteta in a very difficult situation.”

However, Winterburn believes there are plenty of players at the club who could be candidates to take the armband, starting with Sunday’s Premier League game in Leeds.

He said: “The manager has decided it is time to find another captain for Arsenal and I hope we get one who can keep him for a long time as he seems to have changed in recent times.

“You want someone who is going to be a regular, who stays fit and in good shape. It also has to be someone who can command respect in the dressing room.

“I think Kieran Tierney and Gabriel would be put forward. Then there’s Ben White and I’ve heard about goalie Aaron Ramsdale.

“But maybe Bukayo Saka could also be a good shout.

“He was the only player out of the ordinary recently when Arsenal tried to progress and close the gap on the top four.

“But I think at the end of the day Arteta wants someone who speaks up and leads by example.

“They’ll have to be 100% committed in every game – you don’t necessarily have to be more or less vocal in a game to be a strong leader.

“Discipline is the key to this decision, so I would say it’s wide open and not a single stuck-up person will get it.

“Whoever you give the rank of captain, you have to make sure that it does not affect their performance.

“Being the captain of your club isn’t something you want to worry about. It’s something to want to accept, embrace and hopefully keep yourself up to the standards of what the manager expects.”
