The Championship playoff surges of Middlesbrough and Huddersfield have faltered somewhat in recent weeks and, as the season draws to a close, this clash between the two could be a cautious contest.
Boro’s success this season has been built on their solid form at home, but they suffered back-to-back 1-0 defeats at the Riverside, against Fulham and Hull.
They followed that up with a 0-0 draw at Bournemouth and, with just five games to go, Chris Wilder’s side are outside the playoff zone.
Huddersfield have a seven point cushion on Boro, although the hosts have a game in hand on their visitors, and the Terriers have probably done enough to secure a place in the top six.
Carlos Corberan’s side bounced back from defeats to Millwall and Bournemouth with a pair of wins over Hull and Luton before being pushed back twice in a 2-2 draw with QPR on Friday.
Goals have left Boro at exactly the wrong time as they have failed to score in their last three games. Aaron Connolly has failed to impress on loan from Brighton and having an absolute number nine would have been a huge boost for their first six prospects.
They could still qualify for the playoffs, but they made it difficult for themselves, although their last four games after the game against Huddersfield were pretty sweet.
There have been under 2.5 goals in four of Huddersfield’s last six away games and the same bet is being made here in what could end up being a nervous affair given the promotion stakes.
Four of Huddersfield’s last six away games have ended with less than 2.5 goals
