Match preview

Ireland suffered arguably the worst result of manager Stephen Kenny’s reign as they were beaten 1-0 by Armenia in June and the sides meet in that Nations League final with the hosts able to relegate their visitors avoiding another defeat.

Since that unlikely victory, Armenia have recorded four consecutive defeats against the other two members of the group, Scotland and Ukraine, scoring just once and conceding 14 in the process.

Ireland suffered a mixed sack following the shock result, with a 3-0 victory over Scotland as the highlight. They also drew 1-1 with Ukraine and were somewhat unlucky to be beaten 2-1 by Scotland on Saturday after taking the lead and missing a second half through Troy Parrott.

If it’s an Irish front line in need of a confidence boost, there could be worse opponents than Armenia, who have conceded 32 goals in their last nine games.

The hosts can turn on the style going forward, as evidenced by their trio of 3-0 wins in their last ten matches.

Kenny’s side will of course prioritize winning which will see them avoid relegation from the Nations League, but picking up a high score win against lesser opponents will only boost confidence in this young side. .

Nathan Collins opened his account for his country against Ukraine in June and at 9-1 looks too expensive to find the net. The Wolves defender was involved in Ireland’s free-kick goal against Scotland and could once again make his aerial dominance pay.
