Germany will seek revenge against Denmark in their Group B opener at Brentford, although it doesn’t seem guaranteed.
The Germans are the favorites to beat the Danes, but they were equally warm when they met in the last Euro five years ago.
And favorite backers did get their fingers burned that day.
Denmark won that quarter-final in Rotterdam 2-1 and reached the final while the Germans returned to Berlin with their tails between their legs, their 22-year reign as European champions over.
Martina Voss-Tecklenburg’s side have had this game on their minds for a few months, and that may explain why they lost their aura of invincibility. But the fact is, distracted or not, they’ve only won two of six games in 2022 and are no longer the juggernaut they once were.
They are brimming with talent, including defensive rock Marina Hegering and lavish Bayern Munich goalscorer Lea Schuller.
But the Danes have pace, especially on the outside, and will be confident to exploit the holes left behind.
Graceful Nadia Nadim is just a cameo threat now that she’s back from serious injury, although Real Madrid’s youngster Sofie Svava and Chelsea’s dangerous woman Pernille Harder are a threat to anyone .
There’s huge pressure on the Germans knowing they have to get a result with Spain hiding in a competitive section, and they don’t come with guarantees.
The Danes can score a point if they are well organized – and they looked pretty well put together in recent friendlies against Austria, Brazil and Norway, winning two, losing to the Norwegians just 2- 1.
Spain are considered best to beat Finland in the other Group B fixture.
They may no longer be blessed with the talents of Alexia Putellas – with a tendon injury – but they still have a classy roster and should dismantle a Finnish side that have won only one of his last nine matches.
That said, six of the eight they didn’t win came with three goals or less, so they can stubbornly reduce the score.
England have been named as tournament favorites with some firm after opening their Euro 2022 campaign with a narrow 1-0 win over Austria on Wednesday night.
Beth Mead’s 16th-minute goal was the only one-game goal the hosts should have won by more.
He saw them go from 9-2 to 7-2, overtaking Spain on several books. Mead was reduced to 9-1 from 14-1 to be the tournament’s top scorer.
