Burnley vs. Norwich 3 p.m. Saturday
Burnley v Norwich is not one of the most glamorous matches of the European football weekend, but the last two in the Premier League could provide a decent spectacle on Turf Moor.
A late goal from Jamie Vardy denied the Clarets in last weekend’s 2-2 draw at Leicester, but they are likely to secure their first league win of the season against the promoted Norwich, who lost all six high level matches.
The Canaries have conceded at least twice in five of those games and the exception was a 1-0 loss at Arsenal where the Gunners managed 30 shots on Tim Krul’s goal.
Burnley will likely be without winger Maxwell Cornet, who scored his first goal for the club at Leicester, but striker Chris Wood has scored three times in two Premier League wins against Norwich in 2019-2020.
Daniel Farke’s visitors need to aim for maximum points after a tough first round of games, although that was also the case a few weeks ago when they lost 3-1 at home to another promoted club Watford.
Best EFL bet
Northampton vs. Sutton 3 p.m. Saturday
The Sutton Football League newcomers have got off to a good start in Ligue 2 and they seem underestimated by bookies for their trip to Northampton.
The Cobblers start the weekend in fifth place, but they didn’t wow their opponents – three of their four league wins came by a 1-0 margin and they beat Scunthorpe 2-0 after the relegation candidates had a man sent off in the 20th minute.
Sutton’s 4-0 win over Carlisle last weekend was their fourth straight home win in all competitions, but there was also a lot to love about their last away performance in a 2-0 loss to Exeter.
They dominated their hosts, accumulating 18 shots and 14 corners, before the savvy Greeks scored twice in the last quarter of the game. A similar display caliber should cause problems for Northampton.
Sutton played well in a 2-1 loss to leaders Forest Green, who scored in added time, and they failed to concede a first-half goal in the next seven league games, so they are unlikely to turn around at Sixfields.
Best European bet
Atlético Madrid vs. Barcelona 8 p.m. Saturday
Barcelona’s Champions League woes continued with a 3-0 loss to Benfica on Wednesday and they face La Liga champions Atletico Madrid at Wanda Metropolitano on Saturday night.
Atleti lost 1-0 to Alaves last weekend as Barca secured a well-deserved 3-0 home victory over Levante after Memphis Depay put them ahead with a sixth-minute penalty.
The Dutch forward has arrived at a tense time in Barcelona history, but has scored three times in his first six league outings and had as many shots as La Liga top scorer Karim Benzema of Real Madrid .
Depay, who is expected to shoot Barca’s direct free kicks as well as penalties, has scored five goals in two World Cup qualifiers against Montenegro and Turkey in early September and looks like a big prize to open the scoring against L ‘Atletico at a slow start.
Diego Simeone’s side conceded the opening goal in four of their last five league games – except for a 0-0 draw with Athletic Bilbao – and also fell behind in the victory 2-1 in the Champions League on Tuesday against Milan at ten.
The Greeks have won two of their four home Ligue 2 games and drew promotion prospects Bradford and Forest Green, so they should be too strong for struggling Walsall.
The Hammers cannot be lightly opposed given their excellent form throughout 2021, but they will play their seventh game in just 22 days when they host the impressive Brentford on Sunday.
Fulham 6-5, Exeter 5-6, RB Leipzig 2-9, Bayer Leverkusen 7-10.
