Match preview

A defensive masterclass from a disciplined Juventus worked wonders when they beat Chelsea in Turin in late September and similar tactics can help them avoid defeat at Stamford Bridge.

Group H giants meet in West London with the Italians already after playing four, winning four, while defending champions Chelsea need just one point to secure their own safe passage into the last 16.

Both are in good shape in terms of results, with Chelsea rather leading the Premier League and undefeated in the nine years since that 1-0 loss in Italy. Juventus have bounced back from a dismal start to the campaign with just two losses in their last 14 games.

The first match in Turin was poor. There was a lot of intensity but little pretty football with Chelsea claiming 73% possession and creating 16 eight-odds chances, but Thomas Tuchel was ultimately frustrated with a lack of edge against the exceptionally well-trained unit of Massimiliano Allegri.

This scenario could well look like London with the Chelsea boss’s possession and chances, and again, there is no guarantee the Londoners will get it right. Winning 3-0 over a toothless and toothless Leicester on Saturday shouldn’t be seen as a role model for this mission and Chelsea look pretty short against good opposition.

The toss – handy for both clubs of course – seems a fair runner in 90-minute bets.

Allegri has a few key men missing and a few more who won’t be at risk heading into Saturday’s showdown with fourth-placed Atalanta.

But he will field a first-class defense where candidates include Matthijs de Ligt and Leo Bonucci, their center-back penalty-taker, who scored two on the spot in Saturday’s 2-0 win over Lazio, the first time that the Romans have lost at home since February. The 25-1 that he opens the scoring is an option.

Manuel Locatelli is world class while Federico Chiesa’s clever races caused problems for Chelsea in the first game.

Chelsea appear to be improving from week to week, but still miss opportunities and can still be too predictable in their passing game. When opponents lose their shape, they fill their boots; when they don’t – like Juventus didn’t – it becomes much more of a challenge.

It could be tight and the under-goal support seems like a runner as two good teams cancel each other out.
